Visiting - Visas and Residence

Jersey is treated as part of the United Kingdom for British nationality law purposes but maintains local controls over housing and employment which apply to British citizens without specified connections to that dependency (as well as to non-British citizens).

Immigration and Nationality

There are immigration controls at entry points.

Islanders are entitled to full British citizenship, but those with no United Kingdom or EU connection through family or residence do not have the automatic right to reside or work in the European Community.

Passports and Visas

Passport and visa regulations are the same as for the UK, granting visiting rights to UK and EU passport holders. UK residents do not formally need a passport to enter Jersey, but the immigration authorities strongly recommend that you have some form of photo ID with your name and address.

Certain nationalities, known as visa nationals, must have a visa before travelling to the UK or Jersey. Nationals of other countries may also need an entry clearance, depending on the reason for the visit.

As a general rule, those who require a visa for entry to the UK also require a separate visa for entry to Jersey. Visit the Jersey government website for more information.

Applications should be made to any British Diplomatic Visa Issuing post in your normal country of residence (British Embassy) or in the UK, the visa section of the UK Passport Office in London (by appointment only).

Application requirements

The following are the basic requirements you are likely to need when applying for a visa:
  • application form
  • valid passport with at least two clear pages
  • proof of hotel reservation
  • fee
  • return ticket.

For business purposes, a letter outlining the reasons for your trip from the company you are visiting is usually required with the application. The Jersey authorities will then contact the company to confirm your plans, including your accommodation and who is paying for the visit.

Please note: the Government of Jersey reserves the right to alter visa requirements for other nationals wishing to visit Jersey frequently and at short notice. Therefore, travellers should contact the UK Passport Office for up-to-date information before booking travel.
